Fix your computer safely
Safe Mode is a extremely useful tool when trying to correct an issue on your computer. With viruses and unwanted programs that will not go away, Safe Mode becomes an easy method to remove these issues with minimal hassle. But how do you get into Safe Mode and once I’m in Safe Mode what does it do?
Getting into Safe Mode
Windows 7 & Older
When the computer starts to boot keep pressing F8 repeatedly. Soon you see a menu that allows you some different Safe Mode options. Just Safe Mode is typically good but I prefer Safe Mode with Networking. Using the arrow keys to highlight the choice just hit ENTER to select, after a little loading you will be in Safe Mode.
Booting into Safe Mode on Windows 8 is a little different, same principle but requires an additional key. As your computer is booting hold SHIFT while pressing F8 repeatedly.
Once the menu comes up select
- Advanced Options
- Startup Settings
- Now press 4 for Safe Mode or 5 for Safe Mode with Networking
This should boot you into safe mode, if you still have trouble the video below is a great tutorial.
Hopefully you have made it into Safe Mode, but now what? Well Safe Mode is like normal windows but without anything loading or running in the background. This basic load of Windows is great for uninstalling unwanted programs, cleaning viruses and running some automated tools like I discuss in Remove Malware before it’s too Late.
The reason why I recommend using Safe Mode with Networking is because you can still access the internet to get help and download the needed tools. It is also handy to let the removal tools update before removing the nasty stuff. Another great reason is removal programs like Malwarebytes are much more effective in Safe Mode. So head over to our Downloads page, try CCleaner and Malwarebytes from Safe Mode.
