A computer creates heat to function, and requires air to keep cool. As a computer operates, it draws air through the case attracting dust and debris, which get caught inside and make the cooling process less efficient. The dust should be cleared from the computer on a regular basis in order to keep the computer operating and performing at its best. These basic cleaning instructions will help your computer run better and last longer.

Physical Computer Cleaning – Once every 6 months or more often based on environment

Materials Needed: Small Spray bottle, isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol, microfiber cloth, spray can of air, vacuum. You can find a small spray bottle, isopropyl alcohol, and a set of microfiber clothes at Wal-Mart for under $10. Fill the small spray bottle with 50% isopropyl alcohol and 50% water. The alcohol provides the cleaning agent and makes the solution evaporate so it will not cause damage to the computer.

Laptop:

1. Unplug laptop from AC Adapter and remove the battery.
2. Using a can of spray air you can blow out any vent holes on the laptop. Make sure you blow out the heat vents and fans well to remove any dust or debris.
3. Using a can of spray air, you can blow out any debris from the keyboard.
4. Using a spray bottle with isopropyl alcohol and water (50/50) and a microfiber cloth: spray the mixture on the cloth and then wipe down the laptop, keyboard, and screen. WARNING: Do not spray the solution directly on the laptop.
5. After following these steps, you can insert the battery and power up.

Desktop:

1. Unplug all cables or accessories connected to the desktop.
2. Move the desktop to a static free location (kitchen or garage works well, just no carpet).
3. To remove static and discharge yourself, touch a large metal object.
4. Remove the side panel. Usually there are just a few standard Phillips screws or a lever.
5. With the side panel removed, you can use a can of spray air to gently blow the dust out then use a vacuum hose to gently vacuum any remaining dust. Make sure you do not disconnect any of the cable connections, and if you do, just reconnect it. Making the fans spin with the force of the air or vacuum is fine.
6. Make sure to remove dust and debris from the CPU-fan/heat-sink and the power supply.
7. After a thorough but gentle cleaning you can now put the side panel back on.
8. Reconnect desktop and power up.
