hp-logo_BW_smallThis article will cover how to run a diagnostic on a HP Laptop or Desktop.  This article matches most HP Notebooks/Laptops, dv4, dv5, dv6, dv7. The options are similar for older models and desktops so just follow the prompts from the splash screen as indicated. If you are running this on a laptop make sure it’s plugged in.

If your computer does not have an option to run diagnostics then it is not supported on your computer, but you can have a technician run diagnostics with other diagnostic tools not built into the computer.

1. Turn your computer on. Upon start-up you will first be greeted by the splash screen.

2. At this screen you will press the ESC key for the Startup Menu. On some desktop/laptop models you will have the options on this screen.

F1           System Information

F2           System Diagnostics

F9           Boot Device Options

F10         BIOS Setup

F11         System Recovery

In the case where you are greeted with the options on the splash screen press the option for “System Diagnostics”

In this menu there are several options depending on which hardware device you want to diagnose. You can press F2 for a quick test of the system. In this case I chose to run a Hard Drive Diagnostic, the most common.

Press F4 for the Hard Disk Test

5. Hard Disk Test

The Hard Disk Test will first do a Quick Test then a Full Test followed by a SMART Test. Allow approximately 2 hours to finish the tests. It will let you know whether the test passed or failed. If any of the Hard Disk Tests Fails then you should replace your Hard Drive.

The hard drive is the most common problem in computers. If anything fails then you should address the issue right away, problems only get worse with time.
